The first SnowCones event was tested out last weekend, and what an event it was! Fully sold out & then some! This event saw a lot of new drivers getting involved in winter Time Trial events.
The event ran without any major issues, lots of slides & smiles were had. Most people were happy just to have an excuse to get out of their house and do race car stuff! The track layout was set up for maximum sideways action, with minimal cone chasing.
RAD Torque Raceway went above & beyond clearing out snow for this event, huge thanks to them! The surface was perfect, a thick layer of compacted ice & snow with just a bit of gravel to give some traction.
With this just being a "feeler event" to test out the idea and gather feedback, changes are now finalized for the next one. The goal for the SnowCones event is to keep it daily driver & noob friendly, while it still being one hell of a fun time for all skill levels!
Thank you to everyone who took the time to give feedback!
Updates
Scoring
At the last event we went off each drivers single fastest run for simplicity. This didn't work out, as the track conditions changed, and everyone slowed down for the second heat. With some recommendations & voting, we're going to use each drivers fastest 2 runs from each heat and total them to get their final score.
Tire Rules
With the majority of people using their daily drivers and standard winter tires, the rules have been updated to ensure it's fair for the next one. For the AWD, FWD, and RWD classes, stud protrusion is now limited to 1.5mm. If you're using a tire that came pre-studded from the factory, or one with the proper-sized studs installed, you will be fine. However, if you're using a tire with longer studs installed, you will likely be over the 1.5mm limit. Tires still need to be street legal and DOT approved. Un-studded tires can have extra sipping cut into them, and studded tires must remain unmodified.
Tires must be winter rated, Street Legal & DOT approved.
Un-Studded tires may have extra sipping added
Studded tires must remain unmodified & use the factory installed studs, or any TSMI stud. Max protrusion is 1/16" (1.5 mm)
*TSMI studs are just your standard studs that any tire shop puts in.
Open Class
To accommodate those who want to use tires with longer studs, modified tires & specialty competition tires, the new Open Class has been added. There are limits put in place to ensure safety and to prevent the use of "home-made" studded tires.
For all the ice racers, your NASCC spec bolted tires are allowed!
Tires must be rated for Automotive use
Studs must be rated for Automotive use & can only be installed into tires designed to accept studs. Screw in studs are not permitted.
Bolted Tires are allowed if built to current NASCC bolted tire spec.
That's it for changes, the next SnowCones event is on February 8th. With snow in the forecast & freezing temps over the next week, the surface will be once again perfect for it! Registration for it is open on Motorsportreg.
See you all on the 8th!
